There’s nothing much that can be done about the simplistic architecture (in design if not now appearance) but impressively Black Mesa manages to skirt around or simply remove the less beloved elements.įor a start this isn’t actually the whole game, but only the first 80 per cent. Like any game Half-Life is not without its flaws, in fact for such a cast iron classic it has more than you might suppose. Predictably though the new voice-overs are far less impressive, and we’re not sure why the originals weren’t kept exactly as they were - but perhaps that was a legal requirement. The new music in Black Mesa is even more successful though, and the all-new soundtrack is far more memorable than the original’s inconsistent - in terms of quality and volume - score.

The visuals are the most obvious change and although they’re very far from cutting edge they’re a considerable improvement on Half-Life: Source, Valve’s own rather half-hearted attempt to update the game using Half-Life 2’s Source engine. Whether it’s working out how to repair a broken reactor or creeping along trying to avoid a giant sound-sensitive Lovecraftian monster, these obstacles seem just as interesting and challenging as a gun fight. Half-Life features many, usually physics-based, puzzle elements that eschew the usual keycard-based fetch quests that were the norm for first person shooters up to that point. Although there are changes in this remake that aspect hasn’t really changed, although the artificial intelligence has been improved to a basic modern standard. Half-Life’s innovations were not necessarily mechanical though, but design and story-based. Released in November 1998 on the PC, Half-Life is arguably the most important first person shooter ever made.
